I have tended not to write too much about my thoughts on work, and the publishing industry in general. There is lots to say: about the general messiness of publishing data, the difficulties in metadata management, and the piecemeal aggregation of systems in an ecosystem where not much capital exists for up front R&D – especially when so much of it is tied up in stock, inventory and pre-press. In part, it is out of selfishness – as in, I end up thinking the commonly thought thought, “I do this all day, and it forms the basis of why I am remunerated, so why would I extend this into my spare time?”
So, those are my thoughts on data analysis in publishing, so far. More to follow.
